CEREC Same-Visit Dental Crowns and Bridges

If you’re plagued by dental problems like cavities, broken teeth, or have suffered tooth loss, you know what a drain it can be on you physically and emotionally. You’re disappointed with your oral health, your teeth hurt when you chew, and your confidence takes a nosedive because you hate smiling.

At Exceptional Dentistry, your oral health matters to us, but so does your quality of life. We offer treatments like CEREC dental crowns and bridges at our Wilmington, DE dental office to help you love your smile again.

Why Your Dentist Recommends Dental Crowns

If you have a cavity, a dental filling may be all you need to restore your smile. For teeth that have been damaged or weakened in some way, our dentist would recommend a dental crown.

Here are some examples of cases when Dr. Matthews and Dr. Bayley would recommend a dental crown:

  • A tooth has a large cavity that’s too extensive to repair with a filling alone.
  • You’ve broken off a piece of your tooth that we can’t fix with bonding or veneers
  • After a root canal to protect the brittle tooth from damage
  • To anchor a dental bridge securely in place
  • To restore function and appearance to your dental implant

Before we begin any dental work, you will understand why Dr. Matthews and Dr. Bayley recommend a crown for you and how it will benefit your oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

The implant is the anchor for your crown and typically takes 2-3 months to heal before it is a sturdy support. Once we determine your implant is strong enough, your crown only takes about 2 weeks before it is ready to be placed and you can eat normally again!

The average lifespan for any crown is about 5-10 years. Although CEREC crowns are tremendously strong and look very natural, the mouth is a very hostile place. Patients that chew ice, consume a lot of sugar, or grind their teeth may find crowns do not last as long. Crowns last longest when they are cared for through daily brushing and flossing and regular dental checkups.

Fortunately, CEREC crowns are no more expensive than other lab-made crowns, and come with the added benefit of being completed in one appointment without the need for temporary crowns or goopy, gaggy impressions.

CEREC crowns are designed to protect the tooth similar to how a helmet protects your head. A crown may be necessary in cases where teeth are broken, have large broken-down fillings, or have had previous root canals.

A CEREC crown is the ultimate time-saver! There is only one appointment needed for a CEREC crown. At that appointment, the tooth is prepared and scanned digitally. Our highly trained and skilled dentists then design your crown chairside on our dedicated computer. The crown is then milled and cemented once it is perfect! A traditional crown requires at least two appointments. The first appointment is similar to a CEREC crown however you will typically have multiple goopy impressions taken and you will be fitted with a plastic temporary crown to wear for a few weeks until the lab returns your final crown. You will then need another visit to have this final crown cemented.

Why CEREC Dental Crowns?

Crowns are a common type of dental restoration that have been around in one form or another for decades. What’s not common is that Dr. Matthews and Dr. Bayley use CEREC technology, Both Dr. Matthews and Dr. Bayley can deliver a fully customized, beautiful dental crown in a single appointment at our Wilmington, DE dental office.

CEREC is an acronym for Chairside Economic Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Using computer-aided design and manufacture, we reduce what used to be a two to three-week wait for a new crown into a single, same-day visit. We use leading-edge technology to take highly detailed digital impressions of your teeth with no mess.

Dr. Matthews and Dr. Bayley use a virtual 3-D model of your tooth to customize your dental crown to fit your smile. Our specialized computer software works with a milling machine in our dental office that works like a 3-D printer to fabricate your dental crown, ensuring accuracy and precision. We can easily address any problems right then and there without the need for a return visit.

Doing everything in one visit allows us to eliminate the need for uncomfortable impressions, multiple visits, and the inconvenience of a temporary crown.

Dental Bridges Replace Missing Teeth

When you lose a tooth, it’s a good idea to replace it as soon as possible, even if the gap’s not noticeable when you smile. Even one missing tooth can lead to problems like jaw bone loss, tooth misalignment, teeth grinding and TMJ problems, and even further tooth loss.

We offer dental bridges at our Wilmington, DE dental office because they’re a tooth replacement that works well for most people. An artificial tooth called a pontic is designed to sit in the space left by a missing tooth. The pontic is anchored to adjacent teeth with dental crowns, so these teeth must be healthy enough to support the bridge.

Once your new dental bridge is in place, you’ll be able to chew comfortably and smile confidently again.

CEREC Same-Visit Dental Crowns and Bridges Technology

Digital Impressions

Digital impressions use a high-resolution, wand-like camera connected to advanced computer software to scan your teeth and gums and create a virtual 3-D model of your mouth. This model can be used for various purposes, such as designing crowns, bridges, bite guards, retainers, and implant restorations.

Digital impressions are less messy and more pleasant than traditional gooey molding material, reducing gagging and overall waste.

CEREC Same-Visit Crowns

With computer-aided design and manufacture, we can take what used to be a 2-3-week process to get a dental crown into a single, same-day visit with CEREC technology. We use a digital impression camera to take a comfortable impression of your teeth in a matter of minutes.

A ceramic dental crown is then designed in computer software and milled, ensuring accuracy and precision. We can easily correct any mistakes at that time without you having to return for a separate visit. The ceramic crown is then glazed and fired in a furnace to achieve full hardness.

Doing everything in one visit allows us to eliminate wearing a temporary crown, uncomfortable impressions, and reduces post-operative sensitivity and amount of anesthetic needed.
